25 Breast Cancer Myths Busted

Myth: Only women with a family history of breast cancer are at risk.
Reality: Roughly 70% of women diagnosed with breast cancer have no identifiable risk factors for the disease. But the family-history risks are these: If a first-degree relative (a parent, sibling, or child) has had or has breast cancer, your risk of developing the disease approximately doubles. Having two first-degree relatives with the disease increases your risk even more.

Myth: Wearing an underwire bra increases your risk of getting breast cance
Reality: Claims that underwire bras compress the lymphatic system of the breast, causing toxins to accumulate and cause breast cancer, have been widely debunked as unscientific. The consensus is that neither the type of bra you wear nor the tightness of your underwear or other clothing has any connection to breast cancer risk.

Myth: Most breast lumps are cancerous.
Reality: Roughly 80% of lumps in women's breasts are caused by benign (noncancerous) changes, cysts, or other conditions. Doctors encourage women to report any changes at all, however, because catching breast cancer early is so beneficial. Your doctor may recommend a mammogram, ultrasound, or biopsy to determine whether a lump is cancerous.

Myth: Exposing a tumor to air during surgery causes cancer to spread.
Reality: Surgery doesn't cause breast cancer and it doesn't cause breast cancer to spread, as far as scientists can tell from the research so far.

Your doctor may find out during surgery that your cancer is more widespread than previously thought, however. And some animal studies have shown that removing the primary tumor sometimes enables metastatic cancers to grow, but only temporarily; this has not been demonstrated in humans.

Myth: Breast implants can raise your cancer risk.
Reality: Women with breast implants are at no greater risk of getting breast cancer, according to research. Standard mammograms don't always work as well on these women, however, so additional X-rays are sometimes needed to more fully examine breast tissue.

India-bound 2016 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport variant-wise Thai pricing leaked; August 1 reveal

The highly-anticipated Mitsubishi 2016 Pajero Sport will be unveiled to the world on August 1, 2015. A day before its official debut at the 2015 Bangkok Big Motor Sale, a Thai website has reported that new Mitsubishi Pajero Sport will be offered in three variants; namely, GLS, GT and GT with all-wheel drive. The GLS variant will be priced at 1.138 million Baht (INR 20.69 lakh)* and the GT variant will be priced at 1.25 million Baht (INR 22.72 lakh)*, and the top-end GT AWD variant will wear a price tag of 1.45 million Baht (INR 26.36 lakh)*. The website has also snapped a picture of the new SUV’s rear. The biggest change noticed here are the new vertically-oriented taillights, over the predecessor’s horizontally-oriented units.

*Note – Expected Thai prices mentioned
The front fascia of the 2016 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport wears the carmaker’s new ‘Dynamic Shield’ design, similar to one found on the new-gen Outlander. Other design touches include a set of sleek headlamps, aggressively styled, chrome-garnished front grille, muscular wheel arches, LED DRLs, plus blackened B- and C-pillars.

Underneath, the 2016 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is based on the new-generation Triton pickup truck. The Japanese carmaker will likely use the Triton’s 2.4-litre turbo-diesel, four-cylinder, MIVEC engine that develops 181 PS of power and 430 Nm of twist; the powerplant will be mated to a 6-speed manual and automatic transmission. Having said that, Mitsubishi may also offer an all-new 8-speed unit with the 2016 Pajero Sport, though that remains to be seen. Concerning the AWD variants, power from the motor will be sent to all four wheels via Mitsubishi’s Super Select all-wheel drive system.

Triumph Motorcycles USA fined $ 2.9 million by NHTSA

enalty amounting to $2.9 million was imposed against Triumph Motorcycles Ltd by the US Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for violating the Safety Act’s reporting requirements and also failing to respond to communications from the department.

According to the consent order, Triumph is to pay $1.4 million as a cash penalty along with $500,000 to meet requirements to improve its safety practices. If the company violates this order or if any further Safety Act violations come up, an additional $1 million will be imposed. The consent order also instructs Triumph to hire an independent consultant to audit the company’s safety practices amd provide written plans for the approval by the NHTSA regarding practices and employee training. It also requires the company to form a compliance officer position which has direct access to its board and senior executives.

Triumph Tiger 800 XCA (1)

“Today’s enforcement action penalizes past violations, and it promotes the proactive safety culture manufacturers must adopt if they are to reduce safety defects and identify them more quickly than they occur,” says NHTSA administrator Mark Rosekind.

This huge penalty has its roots in September 2014 when Triumph recalled more than 1,300 motorcycles to fix a defect that could reduce steering capability which increases the risk of crashing. The NHTSA started an investigation into the matter in April 2015 to know whether or not Triumph had violated the requirement to report this defect in time. It also carried out investigations into other potential violations such as neglecting to provide quarterly reports on recall completion rates and failure to file early warning data reports regarding death and injury claims, warranty data and other information.

Triumph did admit to several of these violations in response to the investigation.

FIRST DRIVE REVIEW
When this Jaguar XF arrives in the States next year, no one will ask, “Is that the new Jag?” But the 2016 XF is entirely new, it just doesn’t look as new as it is. When the XF first debuted in late 2007, it broke Jaguar sedans away from the old-world aesthetic they’d been mining since the 1960s. Gone were the four round headlights, the lavish chrome, and the slavish devotion to the British firm’s heyday. It was the new Jaguar. We were so smitten by the XF’s design and dynamics that we put it on our 10Best list in 2009. As the first modern Jaguar you could drive without looking like you’d borrowed your great uncle’s car, its rejection of retro design made it possible for the rest of the Jaguar lineup to shake some of the design vestiges of the 1950s and ’60s. But as the XF enters its second generation, it has emerged looking a lot like its predecessor, which is now an old Jaguar.

Even if it doesn’t advance Jaguar design like its predecessor, the 2016 XF is still a damn good sequel. Its shape retains the aggression you expect of a brand named after a predatory cat. The XF isn’t likely to become the avatar of the gray-haired, but rather the gray-templed. Despite looking like the old XF, no sheetmetal is shared. “A few screws are all that we kept,” says Mike Bradley, senior launch manager. Put old and new next to each other and the new car’s nose appears more blunt, the side glass more upright, and the tail longer. The added length is simply a visual trick, though, as the XF is about the same size as before. The new platform offers two inches of extra wheelbase, but the car is a fraction of an inch shorter overall and lower. In the wind tunnel, the new car’s body is more slippery, boasting a claimed 0.26 Cd to the old car’s 0.29.

Aluminum Everywhere
Look underneath the bodywork, and it’s likely you’ll be eyeing a piece of aluminum. The XF’s aging Ford architecture that dated back to the Lincoln LS and the baroque Jaguar S-type is dead and buried. Aside from the doors, the trunklid, and the rear floorpan, the XF’s architecture is made up of bonded and riveted aluminum castings, extrusions, and stampings. The new platform is shared with the smaller XE, but according to Jaguar, only 20 percent of the XF is shared with the XE. What we find curious is that the doors and trunklid are steel. Saving weight by making door skins and trunklids out of aluminum is a relatively easy and obvious way to shave pounds. So why are the doors and trunklid steel? “It’s done to improve weight distribution,” says Bradley.

There is a bit more steel hidden away in the XF. For example, behind the stamped B-pillar is a high-strength-steel insert that bolsters rigidity and improves side-impact crashworthiness. A cast-magnesium crossbar hides behind the instrument panel and another cast-magnesium piece ties together the front structure. In all, the XF’s unibody is said to consist of 75 percent aluminum and be 28 percent more rigid. In all-wheel-drive V-6 guise, the car will weigh 265 pounds less than before, which would put it at about 4150 pounds. (The last supercharged AWD XF we weighed came in at 4385.)

Powering Up
When the XF goes on sale next year, the available engine will be the current XF’s 3.0-liter supercharged V-6. In base versions, the 60-degree V-6 again inhales from a twin-vortex supercharger, has its thirst slaked via direct fuel injection, and turns out 340 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. This model, dubbed the XF 35t, will start at $52,895, a price drop of about $5000 from last year’s V-6 XF.

A 380-hp version of the same V-6 (as seen in the F-type) will be available, too. The extra power is due to zeros and ones and not any physical differences—the engine is mechanically identical to the 340-horse version. Jaguar didn’t reveal what the 380-hp option will cost in the 35t, but the sportier XF S with the higher-output six will start at $63,695. All-wheel drive will be optional. The rear-biased all-wheel-drive system is similar to its predecessor and can send power forward on demand, but the transfer case now has a chain drive instead of gears. Quiet operation is said to be the major advantage of the chain, but it’s also 16 percent lighter and 10 percent more efficient.

Moving Out
Over the road, the XF is quiet, even with the 2.0-liter turbo-diesel that Jaguar had us sample first. A cold start did make us think that it might be powered by a vibrating iPhone, but once warm and on the road its NVH lessened considerably. This diesel is part of Jaguar’s in-house-engineered Ingenium engine family. When the diesel arrives in the States in the middle of 2016, it will have 180 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque and may surpass 40 mpg on the highway. Jaguar hasn’t announced pricing for the diesel, but it did promise that it will start at less than $50,000.

We also experienced the supercharged V-6s that will go on sale first. We drove both rear- and all-wheel-drive versions in the 380-hp tune. Equipped with a balance shaft, the V-6 doesn’t make much noise, even as it spins right past its 6000-rpm redline and hits its governor near 7000 rpm. There’s a mellow rumble from the engine but no supercharger whine. The eight-speed automatic transmission snaps off shifts quickly and with ease. In Jaguar’s estimation, an all-wheel-drive 380-hp V-6 will run from zero to 60 mph in 5.0 seconds; we figure it’ll be a bit quicker. In our last test of a 340-hp 2015 XF with AWD, we managed a zero-to-60 time of 5.3 seconds. When asked about the possibility of V-8 versions, Jaguar reps smirked, but they aren’t ready to confirm anything.

Some of what the XF shares with the new XE is in the chassis. The independent rear suspension, made mostly of aluminum, comes from the XE. In front, the double wishbone is an adapted version of what’s in the F-type. Two suspension setups will be offered, a standard version with conventional shocks and an optional one with electronic shocks that can adjust damping on their own or via driver input. The roads in Spain where we sampled the cars are glassy smooth, the country apparently having spent its last Euro on road construction, so it’s difficult to judge the ride quality. On these roads the XF is taut but never harsh. Body control is excellent and the XF drives smaller and feels lighter than the German cars in its class.

The electric power steering comes across as light, but it imparts a sense of liveliness. While our European-market test cars were equipped with summer tires, American versions will get all-season rubber that likely will reduce grip and steering feel, but we’ll have to wait and see. It is theoretically possible to order summer tires for the XF, but Jaguar reps tell us it’ll be a special-order situation.

Inside the Shell
Like the exterior, the interior of the XF is a modernization of the themes established by its predecessor. The air vents still open like miniature garage doors; the gear selector is still a small dial that rises when you push the start button. In the center of the instrument panel is a large touch screen that features Jaguar’s latest infotainment system, InControl. On the standard version, phone, audio, and navigation functions, as well as the home screen, have a button for quick access. Once within the system though, there are no redundant controls, so you have to tap the screen to enter a point of interest into the navigation system or tune in a radio station. Response time is good, but it would take some getting used to before we were comfortable using it in traffic. Below the big touch screen are actual buttons that manage the climate-control system. We’d rather have volume and tuning knobs than HVAC buttons. Some audio functions can be controlled via the steering-wheel buttons, but we adjust the radio far more often than the climate control.

An InTouch Pro system with greater functionality will be optional. The Pro version features a larger screen that doesn’t have buttons, but the main screen can be personalized so that the functions you use most are immediately accessible. Opting for InTouch Pro also replaces the mechanical gauges in the cluster with a large configurable TFT screen that can display a large map from the navigation system, and it can show several different gauges that mimic mechanical gauges. Switch the car to Dynamic mode and the speedo and tachometer trade places, with the tach taking center stage.

In-car Wi-Fi will be available and the XF also will feature an app that allows the owner to monitor their car’s mileage, whereabouts, and fuel level. The app will also allow you to start the car, set the interior temperature, turn on the heated or cooled seats, and lock and unlock the doors. Tesla and other manufacturers have offered these capabilities for a couple of years, but they’re new to Jaguar.

Without a formal comparison test, and without driving the finalized U.S. version, we’re not quite ready to lock in the XF’s position in the mid-size luxury-sedan segment. But we can say that the new XF feels more lithe, involving, and playful than the usual suspects from Germany (the Audi A6, BMW 5-series, and the Mercedes-Benz E-class). While it isn’t as aggressive as the sports-car-aping Cadillac CTS Vsport, and its primary controls lack the dogged alertness of the Cadillac’s, it’s not far off. It does have a more pleasing interior than the CTS, and the Jag's supercharged V-6 is smoother than, if not as powerful as, the American car’s twin-turbo six. But this is just the first version of the new XF. Sportier and more powerful versions are undoubtedly on the drawing board.

New BMW 7-series Plug-In Hybrid Packs a Four-Cylinder

When BMW brought out a V-12 in its second-generation 7-series, the move stunned the industry and prompted Mercedes-Benz to follow suit. (In fact, a V-16 had been considered.) Fast forward to the new, sixth generation of the 7-series and BMW is confirming the availability of a four-cylinder, the first ever for a 7. The four will come as a plug-in hybrid, called the 740e xDrive, and will be sold in the United States.

The engine is a 254-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter. It’s supplemented by an electric motor integrated into the car’s eight-speed automatic transmission, and a lithium-ion battery. Total system output is 321 horsepower. The 740e will be able to drive up to 23 miles on an electric charge, although it will be virtually impossible to travel that far in real life even with an extremely soft touch on the accelerator.

In the U.S. market, the 740e—like all 7-series models sold here—will be offered in long-wheelbase form only. All-wheel drive is standard, while it’s an option in other markets. With the extreme level of sound dampening that’s incorporated into the new 7-series, NVH should be a non-issue despite the diminutive engine. That said, our sources at BMW expect that the V-8 model will remain the top seller in the range. “We’ve tried, but we can’t seem to get people off them,” an executive joked.

S660 Roadster a No-Go for U.S., But There’s More to Honda’s Sports-Car Story

While a new Automotive News report indicates that the fantastic, super-mega-tiny S660 roadster isn’t coming to the U.S. as was expected—we understood that a 1.0-liter S1000 was on the table—we thanked our lucky VTECs that we will at least be sold the Civic Type R. According to American Honda executive vice president John Mendel, the S660 is likely too small to cut it stateside, but he did add that we shouldn’t give up hope for a Honda-brand sports car here, which hooray!

Honda S660
As much as we’d love to see the fun-to-drive S660 here, it is truly very, very small: A Fiat 500 is 10.7 inches longer and six inches wider than the S660. Given how poorly micro machines like the Smart Fortwo and others do in the American marketplace, keeping the mid-engined S660 in Japan is likely the smart move. Yet Mendel says U.S. dealers are clamoring for both a low-priced sports car like the S2000 and something akin to the rumored baby Acura NSX designed to take on the likes of the Porsche Cayman.

A 300-hp 3.0-liter turbo inline-six with an eight-speed automatic can be ordered with either rear- or all-wheel drive. An audacious 445-hp 4.4-liter turbo V-8 is optional and comes only with all-wheel drive. The standard Driving Dynamics Control system allows for five distinct driving modes and an available air suspension provides even more fine-tuning. Think of it as a wise investment: Keeping your auto filth-free can boost its resale value and eradicate those nasty end-of-lease excess-wear-and-tear charges. And if you focus on the task at hand, it shouldn't take more than an hour every two weeks. The Interior A shiny exterior polishes your automotive image with the world, but keeping the inside clean makes life more pleasant for you and your family. Dragging the cord of a vacuum cleaner through puddles is an especially bad idea, so clean the interior before the exterior. Dash and doors Using an electrostatic dust cloth, sweep the dash, knobs, vinyl surfaces, and plastic trim. Wipe them down with an all-purpose cleaner using an old towel. Pesky gearshift Gently pull the leather or plastic away from the sides to vacuum it and wipe it down with a cleanser-dampened towel. Floor and seats Start by taking out the floor mats and shaking them. If you don't have floor mats, get them―they protect the carpeting and can be replaced if stained beyond repair. If your region gets a lot of snow or rain, you might want to buy a rubber mat with deep channels to collect mud, sand, and salt (two front mats for inclement weather that each hold more than a quart of liquid, $70, griotsgarage.com). Vacuum the mats, the seats, and the floor carpeting, in that order. Slide the front seats all the way back and make sure to get the debris (spare change and fossilized French fries) from under the front seats. Then move the seats all the way forward and vacuum underneath from the backseat. Tilt the seats back so you can get the nose of the vacuum down in the cracks. Windows and windshield A microfiber cloth and a spritz of water clean well and won't cause streaks. Roll down the windows a few inches to get the grime on the top edges. For the rear window, use the back of your hand so you don't strain your wrist. The Exterior A warm, sunny spot might seem like the perfect place to wash and dry your car, but it guarantees streaks. "We've seen people ruin their finish because they didn't rinse off the grime on the mitt before washing it," says Robert Traicoff, supervisor of paint materials for the Ford Motor Company. One-eighth of a cup of mild dishwashing liquid, like Dove, in a bucket of water is fine for unwaxed finishes. Starting with the roof, soap an arm's-length-size section with your wash mitt and rinse it immediately. Then tackle the hood, the sides, and the trunk, in that order, using the same method, so you go from most to least clean for the sake of the soapy water. To avoid streaking, give the window weather stripping a few hours to dry before you roll down the windows. In Between You won't need to do the full cleanup every time.
